#1 Machu Picchu

Ruins of Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a mountain that the Incas utilized as a place to build their city. One of the main uses was an astronomical observatory. In 1911 it was rediscoverd by an archaeoligist from Yale named Hiram Bingham. Most of the buildings in Machu Picchu have been remarkably reserved and contains about 150 houses. All of the structures and buildings in Machu Picchu were carved from gray granite.

The Incas had a great empire that extended from Chile to the modern day border of Ecuador and Columbia. In 1438 the Inca Empire really began to expand when they triumphed over the Chankas. They saught out alliences and overpowered enemy tribes with military force. Machu Picchu was one of many ceremonial sites for the Incas. In the Inca empire taxes were charged in the form of labor. In my opinion he fact that impressed me most about the Incas was that the way they handled life was successful for them for a long time.
